Why are you reporting this puzzle?

I have to include a collectable Mercedes Benz Gullwing for "M".
Oh what a neat car. I saw Jim Gilmore in one, in Kalamazoo, Mich.

If I had the money, I would buy this, if even just for the pleasure of driving it around. Yes I would.

I agree with you fyreline. thanks for the comment.
I build my car like it is going to be judged perfect by a bunch of picky judges, and then I just get in it and drive it down my dirt road and enjoy it.

Different strokes for different folks. All cars should be considered in the context of their own time . . . in 1955 the Mercedes-Benz 300SL was a moon shot compared to the other cars of its own era. The reality is that my C7 Corvette would flat out embarrass a 300SL on the racetrack today . . . but that's irrelevant, as my Corvette has over 60 years of progress and development over the SL. And will my Corvette be a million-dollar + car 60 years from now? Who knows? At the end of the day, buy what you like (and can afford) and drive the hell out of it. Life is too short for boring cars, cheap cigars or rotgut whiskey. Yes, my Corvettes (especially the 1962) are great cars - but a 300SL is a work of art.

You're right, thanks.
I could never figure out why someone would pay so much more for a Mustang than a real plush Cadillac or Lincoln or even a Rolls Royce. But it is just what they want that they are willing to pay for to get. Personally I would much more rather have a plush Lincoln than any muscle car. But that's just me, and I don't have to worry about the competition.
I'm the guy that put twice the money in a '51 Ford than any one else would even pay for one. It was my dream car.

Someone is making a present day reproduction of these too.
and, I think that Mercedes is making another later version of this same car also. It would probably be a better car than this old model that sold for so much money. ??

I don't know much about the engine other than the engine is a 6 cylinder in line engine that is tipped over toward the passenger side enough to fit under the hood. We would call that a slant 6 engine . So, evidently they went fast,
I think the purchaser bought it just because the seats sit down in between the frame rails, and that makes it feel so much like a sports car.
But they sure do look good.

Thanks Rick.

Way back in my Junior High days I chose the XKE over the Vette and the Citroen DS over the Cadillac for the same reasons - engineering and technology.

mr_51_vic_ss

Thanks to all, Willey, fyreline, blurple and Rick. This is very nice car...
I'm afraid that the Jag XKE would give it a run? at least in it's beauty too.
Both are beautiful and both are 6 cylinders engines.
Yes Corvettes are nice too... If I could only have one, I don't know which one I would choose. Corvette's are made in America though.
This one has a high amount of design engineering, and so does the Jag. ??
tough pick.

I have this car! In this color!
(in 1/25 scale)

Still beautiful to this day....

fyreline

I will indeed keep my Corvettes - both of them - but the Mercedes-Benz 300SL is without question one of the finest road cars ever built, and fully deserving of its million-dollar value.

You can keep your Corvette & I'll take this Mercedes any day
