Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Steve Cash was found dead at age 40 in his Nampa, Idaho home on April 16. Police decided it was suicide by gunshot wound to his chest. He left no note. He had bipolar disease and had recently written on social media that he was on a manic high. I guess it crashed.

He was a smart, funny, very talented young man.

Millions knew him as stevecash83 -- and knew his "talking cats," the profane, foul-mouthed Sylvester and the sweet and shy Gibson, named for Cash's favorite guitar.

From People Magazine:

"Cash, who was also a musician, launched his YouTube channel in 2007 and amassed more than 770 million views over the years.

His "Talking Kitty Cat" series, in which he'd engage in funny "conversations" and situations with his cat Sylvester, featured 69 different videos — the first of which was shared in 2008. Cash uploaded the latest video in December."

Mischka again.

His very first Sylvester The Cat video was an international news "comedy bit" hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjZrUn03kXI (just over a minute): "Hilarious footage of my cat getting angry and swearing at me when I tried to wake him up." Every channel ran it (and had to bleep it).

Sylvester must be almost 20 by now, but I was watching the videos when he was a kitten. "The Mean(er) Kitty" song was a take-off on the probably-most-famous-cat-video "The Mean Kitty Song." I like that one plenty, but Steve Cash captured me and a million other fans with his Talking Sylvester series, which included really difficult puzzles and mysteries in the plot lines (kidnappings? murder? real "Golden Hare" material), as well as stand-alone vids, all of which were generally no more than 2 minutes long, and contained fun weird effects and CGI. The Singing Cat videos are must-sees. He said in an interview that he wanted to be known as a rocking singer (and he played guitar and sang very well), but it was Sylvester who made him famous.

Possibly his best-known Kitty Song is "Kitty Doesn't Like" (2:15 minutes), a fast-driving song about all the things Sylvester doesn't like.

Sylvester is surely sad, too.

Thank you all for letting me indulge myself. Now I can say goodbye to the great guitarist Kitty Master.

Oh, God, I still miss him every day. I am not religious, but I pray for his widow, who filmed his videos and did other behind-the-camera work, such as acting as the dog Shelby's "hands" while at breakfast.

Watching it again, I am laughing helplessly.

That one's for you, @Surreal_Heidi, since you were so kind and made me feel really better.

Mischka

Thanks, Pat, means a lot.

I have a very limited on-line life, and I had never heard of Mr. Cash or any of his creations. But I know you did, Fiona, and I'm sorry that it ended for him like this.

Mischka

Lol! Thanks for that excellent report. Yep, that's Sylvester. I liked when Steve went through the mall, asking random people if they were Todd.

Surreal_Heidi

I found out who Todd was. He was Sylvester's nutcase owner from his first life. Sylvester would use him to terrify the other cats, and would send him emails and texts asking him to remove every other animal in the house so he would get ALL the attention and wet food.

Mischka

Bless you, Heidi.

I don't remember who Todd turned out to be! Steve eventually dropped that story arc and did more one-offs, plus a series introducing a new cat to the home. I loved when Sylvester began to keep a diary.

I never had any idea that he had mental illness. He was just so damn funny and creative.

Surreal_Heidi

I just watched the first 24 of his cat videos. They were hysterical. I'll watch the rest later, and hope I find out who Todd is.

Such a shame that he didn't get sufficient help in time to save his life. He's obviously brought a lot of happiness into many people's lives.

@Mischka
Glad to be one of the ones included here and glad your life is better. Bev.

I saw a few minutes of him with Sylvester last night, Meesh. Your clues were enough to make the search easy. He's funnier than any of us (well maybe not all of us together, that's a coin toss) and will be sorely missed.

Mischka

Thank you all for your comments. I wish I'd known at the time, and could have added to the GoFundMe account, but I'd fallen out of touch with him because I was having so much fun on Jigidi!

You folks have made my life so much better, in every way.

So sad such a talented person has left this earth for, hopefully, a better place. dj RIP

bevpuzzler8

R.I.P. So sad!!

Surreal_Heidi

Mental health has taken so many truly brilliant people. Right away I think of Robin Williams and one of my all-time favorite singers Richard Manuel (of The Band). True genius can have serious burdens with it.

robf

Thank you Mischka.
A great loss. I hope he is in a much better place these days.
