Apples/Carrots - use the perforated vegetable bags
Bananas - Buy more green than yellow to extend their 'shelf' life.
Berries - Rinse in acidulated water to deactivate mould spores, spin dry, place bag in the store-provided 'basket' lined with a paper towel.
Broccoli - clean, cut into bite-size pieces and float in a jug of water.
Lettuce - rinse/clean, spin dry, wrap loosely in a tea towel and then in a bag that is loose
Peaches - rinsed with vinegar water and allowed to dry before storing in the veg crisper with the lid loose.
Watermelon - trim to wedges, store on a plat, uncovered. The fridge will help to concentrate the flavours as the fruit dehydrates over time.

Avocados are tricky. The best luck I have had is to buy them when they are just starting to soften, use as many in two days and then put them in the fridge.

Did you know you can tell if they are overripe by removing the stem?
If white, not ripe; if yellow, ripe; if dark, over-ripe.

So much good information...I especially like the ways to get permanent marker off of things! As far as produce goes, lately the things we buy at Kroger's go bad more quickly than before and the avocados haven't ripened though we've had them for a week. Usually they are rotten by then!
