1943 Austin Ten Light Utility Truck

Standing in a makeshift army camp at Beamish Museum is this 1943 Austin Ten "Tilly" pickup truck in British Army livery (49th (West Riding) Infantry Division markings), showing the fleet designation M5394755.

The utility model, or "Tilly" as it is more popularly known, is the army version of the standard Austin Ten Saloon. It is upgraded from the standard saloon by having a bigger engine and fuel tank fitted, and a water pump and cross country tyres added.

Around 30,000 of these vehicles were manufactured, but only about 160 are known to survive

This particular vehicle now carries trafficators and the registration number UAS 370, which it would not have done in it's army service days.

The car was at the museum as part of their "Dig for Victory" event at the beginning of September 2021.

Right on almost all counts Don.

"Trafficators" is an old word, formerly used over here to describe the winking indicator lights. The word isn't often used now - except by old farts like me! They wouldn't have been on this car originally because when the car was new they hadn't been invented!

You're absolutely right about the M3 halftrack and US Army tents creeping into the side of the shot.

The car would certainly not have had an interior mirror fitted, but neither has this one. The object in the windscreen is a label of some sort, not a mirror.

Thanks Don. I'll leave Terry to talk about the details you raise in case I get ít wrong.

It's a good-looking vehicle. I presume that the "trafficators" are the amber lights on the bumper? A good, descriptive word, but not one that I recall ever hearing in the United States.

Would the rear view mirrors have been on the original vehicle?

I think I spy an M3 Halftrack, a small wall tent, and a GP medium tent in the background.

This was an enjoyable puzzle. The flag, the yellow bridge classification plate, and the 49th Division and Artillery Regiment formation signs all helped me get started on the solution.

Thanks again for the puzzle, Ferret, and for the image and explanatory notes Terry.
