Why are you reporting this puzzle?

[I have also posted a painting by Kent Monkman today, called “Welcoming the Newcomers”, that some might find a bit off-color. If your filter for “offensive” images is set, you will have to temporarily turn it off in order to see that post.]

Kent Monkman, a Canadian artist with Cree ancestry, grew up in Manitoba where he became painfully aware of the tragic result of Canada's past colonialism, the subsequent racism and the fallout from residential schools. All these issues related to First Nations culture, issues that deeply affected how he viewed the world. This collision of cultures forms the basis for his work, as Monkman’s paintings turn stereotypical images of First Nations people on their head. He paints surprising stories of colonization, erotic images of men and women, and aboriginal identity where the commentary can be interpreted in many different ways, usually spiced with his wry sense of humor.

Great link, Francine. Thanks!
I think maybe in this painting, as in some others, he is taking a poke at Picassoesque ("modern") art as well.
His wry sense of humor never fails.

Great Monkman work, as usual, depicting the downside of modernity.
"Casualties of modernity" is a theme that Monkman has also explored elsewhere. Here is a link that might interest you: http://casualtiesofmodernity.com/our-facility.html

If only the European emperors and kings were so ashamed. At least their tailors knew better.

judyredhorn

I just wish that those who cling to that supremacist position WERE ashamed.

The real nudity is the US being exposed by competent historians for what it really has been. For the ideologues concerned about "nudity", the psychologists have a word for this: "projection". If I were one arguing that Christopher Columbus was the discoverer of North America, I'd be ashamed, too.

This painting is not the one that is (possibly, to some) "off-color", but rather the one I posted on the same day as this, titled "Welcoming the Newcomers," which includes some nudity. Regardless, your incisive comment applies as well to that piece as to this one, JeremyHorne. ~Judy

"Off color?" I find this very much ON color, one to which we need to pay attention, lest the Holocene Extinction does occur. I suggest that the "offensive" may be the best defense. From the colonialism and genocide perpetrated by European settlers to that occurring now against Nature, the social and environmental statistician just enters another tally mark, lessening the number of step to humanity's demise. "When will they ever learn ?"
