From the Bonhams website:

The kaleidoscopic nature of Osman Hamdi's biography – he was, at various times, a bureaucrat, archaeologist, museum director, architect, poet, writer, and musician - and his prominent position in both late 19th century French and Ottoman intellectual circles have made him a controversial symbol of Turkish nationalism and cultural reform in recent years. In his capacity as an Orientalist painter, moreover, he has long been considered a curiosity within the genre. Too Turkish for some, too French for others, Osman Hamdi and his works have been framed by the politics of these debates. Singled out for particular attention have been the artist's harem pictures, featuring one or more women engaged in their daily indoor and outdoor pursuits. You're welcome, Lisa. I'm glad you enjoyed the painting, which is pretty wonderful, and the essay, which amazed me. It's the most comprehensive and informative lot essay I've ever come across. ~Blue (I've never liked my given name)

Thank you for this stellar puzzle. Everything about it is interesting and beautifully
rendered. You obviously have an eye for ferreting out highly valued art , as the painting last sold for $9.105,914 per the link you provided. (I spent more time reading the explanatory material and looking at the features of the painting than I did in putting the puzzle together). Lisa

I think I might be able to do that. :-)

Beautiful. If you find any of his harem paintings, I would be interested in seeing/solving them.
