Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Last year I bought some tomatoes from the market that tasted so good I decided to save some seeds and see if I could plant them this year. Well, this is the result. It is loaded with little tomatoes in various sizes right now. Soon I will be eating fresh tomatoes from my own plant!

I hear you about the desert because I live in the Arizona desert! But I'm going to try drying them the way you did and see if it works for me too. And I'm going to check out tomatodirt.com. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm all set now--thanks to you dear dj. Take good care. (ΰ² β€Ώβ†Ό)

Donnajames

@Butterladyflybug7 - Thanks for your comments. I live in the Nevada desert and it just got too hot this summer for it to survive. I looked up how to save the seeds, dry them and grow tomatoes. It does work if you live in a regular area. *lol* :-)) dj

Butterladyflybug7

You did a great job. How did you do it? I've tried doing that several times with different herbs and veggies, but I never succeeded. You must have a green thumb, right? Thanks for showing your beautiful plant. πŸ… πŸ…πŸ…

Donnajames

Donna, Unfortunately it got too hot this summer for the plant to survive. Even watering it 3 times a day was not enough. But I did get a bunch of small tomatoes, so all was not lost. :-))

MOCHAMUM

Nice! Smart of you to save the seeds!

helenpuz

(*&*)

Donnajames

Thanks Helen. I'll look them up.

helenpuz

Don't fret about the site. I posted is in case one of the Jigidi U was interested in them.

helenpuz

Well, I found the site but there are now more varieties in that category now than 10 years ago so I decided to post the site for all desert dwellers http://www.tomatodirt.com/tomatoes-for-hot-dry-climates.html. As I recall, his tomatoes didn't blister or shrivel and had a nice taste. He has moved to Texas and I don't have his info yet. I will talking to his sister soon and will ask her about the type he planted.

Donnajames

Helen, don't fret about it. It was just an experiment. Don't think I'll grow them again. :)) dj

helenpuz

Oh Dang! It won't be quite the same as planting your own seeds, but I know there is a breed of tomatoes which were designed to grow in the Mojave Desert. They grow in extreme heat and arid conditions. I will try to find the name of them. My cousin, Earl, used to grow them every year..... I should remember them, but not today! Be safe, all and happy puzzling! (*&*)

Donnajames

@helenpuz - Alas, Helen, it got too hot out here (weeks over 120F) and it died! I did get some good tomatoes before it went kaput! and they were really good. *lol* dj

helenpuz

Congratulations DJ!! I am certain they will be the best tasting tomatoes you have ever eaten! It certainly does look like a very healthy plant.... Good job, friend! (*&*)

Donnajames

Well, hi to you to!!! How have you been. Love your new avatar. We are all doing good here. Hope all is well with you too. Don't be such a stranger! :-)) dj

Haze1952

@Donnajames
Just saying hi. Saw the lovely puzzle that Birgit posted. Sent her a note. Hope that you are doing well and your family too.🌷

Donnajames

Yes, I managed to get about 15-20 of them. Num num num!!!!

sillychick

:( sob sob sigh wahhhhhhhh, I hope Ewe did @ least get a few.

Donnajames

Thanks, Helen. This was just an experiment I was trying. I actually dried seeds from a tomato we ate last year and I planted them this year. Maybe if I had them in the ground instead of in a pot that might have helped. *lol*

helenpuz

http://www.tomatodirt.com/tomatoes-for-hot-dry-climates.html DJ, here is a site which has tomatoes for desert climates, along with hints for better success with them. Hope this helps, dear!

helenpuz

Dang, dang!!!! What a shame! Hmmmm, I remember my cousin saying there is a type of tomato which grows well in the desert regions in California. I bet these would grow for you down there. We have been up in the 90s here in Reno! AND SO DANG SMOKEY TOO!!!! GRRRRR.

bjondron

Ta, ta, ta!...

Donnajames

@helenpuz - we had too much heat out here for too long a period (about a week and a half) of over 120F. Even giving it water 3 times a day, the heat got to it and it gave up its ghost!!! Need to play Taps for it! :-( dj hahaha

helenpuz

Lots of fun on this site today!!! Love it! Say, can I grow tomatoes from heirloom tomatoes too???

Donnajames

Deader than a door nail!!!! *lol*

sillychick

@are there any left???????

Donnajames

Thanks Iris..... :-))

sillychick

Plans??? What plans??? I like plans :) What are wee planning now??? *LOL* ")

irisriver

Awesome gardening! grins!☺

Donnajames

I knew that and have plans for you!!! mauhahahahaha

sillychick

Since your rate is 2 high, I will just come over & help myself, *LOL* (Which is my plan all along :}

Donnajames

And the thing is....people ORDER it!!! LOL

bjondron

Ha,ha. I'll keep my eye out on "Shark Tank", I've seen some strange things people have ask money for!

Donnajames

LOL I wouldn't put it past someone to do that. :-))

bjondron

Tongue & cheek humor really but...now days it could be just that someone has developed such a product (to keep the plant warm during frost night).

Donnajames

Not a clue....may I ask why you ask???

bjondron

Do you think the gardening store might be selling Solar Plant Panels...they sell everything else!

dhi

;-))

Donnajames

Free dirt???!!! I only use Miracle Grow potting soil!!! Besides, we don't have dirt out here....it is mostly sand and rocks!!!!! :-))

dhi

With the amount of fertilizer you are putting into these comments, I would think it must come at a very economical cost (aka dirt cheap, as in free) due to the abundance of it.

Tongue in cheek is starting to hurt, LOL.

Donnajames

Oooh! Oooh! Good one Betty. Yep, that too!!!! :-))

bjondron

Gas and lumber AND TOMATOES prices are going up!

Donnajames

But then I have to charge you for the water, and my maintenance fee is quite high! Oh, and then there is the fertilizer charge ...................

dhi

LOL

sillychick

YES!!! YES!!! She IS, mauhahahahaha... :}

dhi

So I take it you are paying rent for the use of the pot in the form of produce?

Donnajames

Out here in the desert, we don't need to keep the soil warm. The sun does a very good job of that all by itself!!! hahaha (sometimes it keeps it TOO hot!)

dhi

Dark blue/black, pretty much one and the same, I think.

Donnajames

:-}-------------

sillychick

WHAAAAAAAA!!! WHAAAAAAAA!!! WHAAAAAAAA!!! I'm telling mOm on Ewe :} :} :}

Donnajames

Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope! hahahahahaha

sillychick

Does this mean that I get my BLUE pot back???? Yeah it does, yep yep yep ha ha ha :)

Donnajames

Got ya!!! :-))

dhi

One main trunk with offshoots is stronger than several uprights with branches off of them.
A black pot helps to keep the roots warm, promoting further growth.

Donnajames

Huh???

dhi

Also, trim to one main upright stalk from the beginning.
Plant in a black container for maximum heat absorption.

Peggystarr3

that is really a green thumb marvel. i've never had good luck with any of my garden trials - including tomatoes. i have the black thumb. i don't even try anymore.

sillychick

To get BIG Tomatoes don't 4get 2 take some of the Tomatoes or flowers (preferably the flower) off 2 prevent over crowding ") of course Google will help better, me bad ;)
I'm excited 4 Ewe, hurry hurry Tomatoes, hurry ")

Donnajames

Helen, the experiment will be a success if they taste like tomatoes!!! The plant is loaded with flowers and small green tomatoes. :-))

helenpuz

Donna, such a good experiment! So happy you are already seeing budding tomatoes!

Donnajames

Hey, I have one that has already turned red and one that is almost ready! They are a lot smaller than the mother plant, but that's okay. Now if they taste as good as the original......... *lol*

sillychick

Thx @dhi, I'll know now when 2 come over & get those luscious Tomatoes, just don't tell @Donnajames, what I just said, b/c then she mite set some of those ouchy traps out on me :( then I woodn't get any mouth watering Tomatoes :( I have 2 get those Tomatoes b/c the Plant is in MY pot, *LOL* :)

Donnajames

:-))

dhi

I learned it on a gardening program. ;-)

Donnajames

I never knew that....thanks Donna. :-))

dhi

You probably already know this, but they are sweeter if they are picked before watering when the flavour is more concentrated. I always wondered what made the difference in the same fruit off of the same plant.

Beautiful plant - enjoy your harvest

Kyrin

Oh my! I LOVE tomatoes! Hope you enjoy a great bounty of them XO

Donnajames

Thanks, Jill. I hope to have lots of tasty fruit soon. :-))

JillianB

Well done you! Definitely nursed it through well, enjoy the fruit of your labours Donna.

Donnajames

Nah! They know better than to steal MY tomatoes! :-))

sillychick

Watch out 4 little Critters that ewe may not know ewe have...they will steal them faster than me, b/c they won't wait until those yummy Tomatoes ripen (Yikes!!!, now I am worried 4 Ewe :(

Donnajames

Oh, they probably won't make it into the house unless they all start ripening at one time. Not worried about hubby because he isn't really into tomatoes...he eats them, but not one of his favorites.

Birgit73

I wouldn't be wasting them on bread at all...just like little snacks...yum, tomatoes fresh off the plant. Well done to get a healthy plant from the original seeds, sis.

Donnajames

I'll keep the light on for you!!!

Donnajames

June, I hope so. I've been waiting a whole year to do this! *lol* And, I do not use any chemicals other than some tomato fertilizer in the soil.

sillychick

(sigh) I'll Bee right over ASAP *LOL*

Donnajames

@sillychick - It is even prettier in person (as you know) because it is an iridescent blue.

sillychick

Oh ewe :} Since I don't technically sleep, butt cat-nap, I'm going 2 sneak up some night when ewe & hubby are all snuggled up & sleeping like Babies & grab me some of our Nice Ripe Mouth Watering Tomatoes & then I just might leave ewe some, Mauhahahahaha. Count it as a deposit 4 using my Planter, BTW, it does look good holding that Pretty Tomato Plant :) *LOL*

jandchris

They should taste even better Donna as the Plant has not been sprayed with all the strong Chemicals that professional growers use. You have done extremely well getting such a beautiful plant from the seeds you harvested and dried yourself. Well done!

Donnajames

@sillychick - Yep! I'm proud of my baby. heh heh You noticed I'm using your blue planter, huh! I snuck it out of your back yard when you weren't looking. And of course I will share if there are any left!!! mauhahahahaha

Donnajames

@jandchris - This is the first time growing tomatoes from a 'real' tomato I ate the previous year. I looked up online how to ferment and dry the seeds and then I started them indoor back in March. Now, I don't know if they will taste like their parent, but I sure hope so.

Donnajames

@minipooh4u - Montaine - that is exactly what I used to do when I had a garden in California. NOTHING made it into the house----I would eat everything while out in the garden...tomatoes, peas, beans, radishes, you name it. Just wipe them off on my jeans and gone in seconds!!! *lol*

sillychick

OMGosh, Totally Awesome Farmer dj :) I like mine cut up & mixed w/cut up avocado in cottage cheese, thank-Ewe very much :) That is soooooo kewl :). I'll bet it has made ewe feel proud which it should, BTW Ewe are using my Blue Planter again BIG siS (I was wondering where it wandered off 2...Butt wait a minute b4 ewe get your Depends in a twist...I'll let ewe get away w/it this time since WE are going 2 have some mouth watering Tomatoes to enjoy :} BTW Beautiful Plant, looks like it is doing very nicely :), *LOL*

jandchris

What a healthy plant this is - you should get masses of fruit from it. I always plant my tomatoes from seed - more trouble than buying plants from the Nursery, but well worth it I think. Having said that, however, my tomatoes were a complete and utter disaster this year. In fact, the whole garden was. Enjoy your tomatoes when they are ready to eat. :-))

Donnajames

That is what I planted it for---a BLT!!! I'll send you some Betty. *lol*

bjondron

Think of me when you have your first BLT! Nothing better! Marked.
