I hear you about the desert because I live in the Arizona desert! But I'm going to try drying them the way you did and see if it works for me too. And I'm going to check out tomatodirt.com. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm all set now--thanks to you dear dj. Take good care. (ಠ‿↼)

@Butterladyflybug7 - Thanks for your comments. I live in the Nevada desert and it just got too hot this summer for it to survive. I looked up how to save the seeds, dry them and grow tomatoes. It does work if you live in a regular area. *lol* :-)) dj

You did a great job. How did you do it? I've tried doing that several times with different herbs and veggies, but I never succeeded. You must have a green thumb, right? Thanks for showing your beautiful plant. 🍅 🍅🍅

Donna, Unfortunately it got too hot this summer for the plant to survive. Even watering it 3 times a day was not enough. But I did get a bunch of small tomatoes, so all was not lost. :-))

Well, I found the site but there are now more varieties in that category now than 10 years ago so I decided to post the site for all desert dwellers http://www.tomatodirt.com/tomatoes-for-hot-dry-climates.html. As I recall, his tomatoes didn't blister or shrivel and had a nice taste. He has moved to Texas and I don't have his info yet. I will talking to his sister soon and will ask her about the type he planted.

Oh Dang! It won't be quite the same as planting your own seeds, but I know there is a breed of tomatoes which were designed to grow in the Mojave Desert. They grow in extreme heat and arid conditions. I will try to find the name of them. My cousin, Earl, used to grow them every year..... I should remember them, but not today! @helenpuz - Alas, Helen, it got too hot out here (weeks over 120F) and it died! I did get some good tomatoes before it went kaput! and they were really good. *lol* dj

Thanks, Helen. This was just an experiment I was trying. I actually dried seeds from a tomato we ate last year and I planted them this year. Maybe if I had them in the ground instead of in a pot that might have helped. *lol*

Dang, dang!!!! What a shame! Hmmmm, I remember my cousin saying there is a type of tomato which grows well in the desert regions in California. I bet these would grow for you down there. We have been up in the 90s here in Reno! AND SO DANG SMOKEY TOO!!!! GRRRRR.

@helenpuz - we had too much heat out here for too long a period (about a week and a half) of over 120F. Even giving it water 3 times a day, the heat got to it and it gave up its ghost!!! Need to play Taps for it! :-( dj hahaha

Free dirt???!!! I only use Miracle Grow potting soil!!! Besides, we don't have dirt out here....it is mostly sand and rocks!!!!! :-))

With the amount of fertilizer you are putting into these comments, I would think it must come at a very economical cost (aka dirt cheap, as in free) due to the abundance of it.

Out here in the desert, we don't need to keep the soil warm. The sun does a very good job of that all by itself!!! hahaha (sometimes it keeps it TOO hot!)

One main trunk with offshoots is stronger than several uprights with branches off of them.
A black pot helps to keep the roots warm, promoting further growth.

Also, trim to one main upright stalk from the beginning.
Plant in a black container for maximum heat absorption.

that is really a green thumb marvel. i've never had good luck with any of my garden trials - including tomatoes. i have the black thumb. i don't even try anymore.

To get BIG Tomatoes don't 4get 2 take some of the Tomatoes or flowers (preferably the flower) off 2 prevent over crowding ") of course Google will help better, me bad ;)

Helen, the experiment will be a success if they taste like tomatoes!!! The plant is loaded with flowers and small green tomatoes. :-))

Hey, I have one that has already turned red and one that is almost ready! They are a lot smaller than the mother plant, but that's okay. Now if they taste as good as the original......... *lol*

You probably already know this, but they are sweeter if they are picked before watering when the flavour is more concentrated. I always wondered what made the difference in the same fruit off of the same plant.

Watch out 4 little Critters that ewe may not know ewe have...they will steal them faster than me, b/c they won't wait until those yummy Tomatoes ripen (Yikes!!!, now I am worried 4 Ewe :(

Oh, they probably won't make it into the house unless they all start ripening at one time. Not worried about hubby because he isn't really into tomatoes...he eats them, but not one of his favorites.

I wouldn't be wasting them on bread at all...just like little snacks...yum, tomatoes fresh off the plant. Well done to get a healthy plant from the original seeds, sis.

June, I hope so. I've been waiting a whole year to do this! *lol* And, I do not use any chemicals other than some tomato fertilizer in the soil.

Oh ewe :} Since I don't technically sleep, butt cat-nap, I'm going 2 sneak up some night when ewe & hubby are all snuggled up & sleeping like Babies & grab me some of our Nice Ripe Mouth Watering Tomatoes & then I just might leave ewe some, Mauhahahahaha. Count it as a deposit 4 using my Planter, BTW, it does look good holding that Pretty Tomato Plant :) *LOL*

They should taste even better Donna as the Plant has not been sprayed with all the strong Chemicals that professional growers use. You have done extremely well getting such a beautiful plant from the seeds you harvested and dried yourself. Well done!

@jandchris - This is the first time growing tomatoes from a 'real' tomato I ate the previous year. I looked up online how to ferment and dry the seeds and then I started them indoor back in March. Now, I don't know if they will taste like their parent, but I sure hope so.

@minipooh4u - Montaine - that is exactly what I used to do when I had a garden in California. NOTHING made it into the house----I would eat everything while out in the garden...tomatoes, peas, beans, radishes, you name it. Just wipe them off on my jeans and gone in seconds!!! *lol*

OMGosh, Totally Awesome Farmer dj :) I like mine cut up & mixed w/cut up avocado in cottage cheese, thank-Ewe very much :) That is soooooo kewl :). I'll bet it has made ewe feel proud which it should, BTW Ewe are using my Blue Planter again BIG siS (I was wondering where it wandered off 2...Butt wait a minute b4 ewe get your Depends in a twist...I'll let ewe get away w/it this time since WE are going 2 have some mouth watering Tomatoes to enjoy :} BTW Beautiful Plant, looks like it is doing very nicely :), *LOL*

What a healthy plant this is - you should get masses of fruit from it. I always plant my tomatoes from seed - more trouble than buying plants from the Nursery, but well worth it I think. Having said that, however, my tomatoes were a complete and utter disaster this year. In fact, the whole garden was. Enjoy your tomatoes when they are ready to eat. :-))
