Newlywed couple arrives at 2:00 for dinner. Mother-in-law is furious. "You're late!" "What? We're three hours early!" "Dinner is at noon! Supper is at 5:00." "OK then, what's for supper?" "Dinner!"
So confusing…..it was supper (what’s for supper?) but it was ‘be home in time for dinner’. Sunday dinner was at 2pm, but there was something else later? I’m hungry, let’s eat.
I’m in the UK so, as you can guess, it’s a bit odd. Breakfast is followed by either lunch or dinner. Now in the afternoon you may or may not take afternoon tea. The evening meal can be referred to as tea, dinner or supper. It all depends on what part of the country you are from and your class. Needlessly complicated for such a small country.
Same as @peasterberg: dinner at noon, supper in the evening - until family moved to North Carolina. Served before the 6:30 PM news hour. Yes, you could only get the news from 6:30 for local, and then national at 7:30, then 'prime time' TV shows started at 8 PM.
