The bluebonnet is Texas' state flower. It's an early-spring bloomer, and is a member of the legume family. Endemic to Texas, it includes several different species of the genus Lupinus, which range from only a few inches in height in the eastern portion of the state, to plants as tall as 2 1/2 to three feet growing in the most arid portions of western Texas. All are lupines as plants that fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for the purpose of growing other crops, and as a result, it is often sown by farmers and ranchers in land that will be used for grazing.
