Happy 4th July Independence Day USA Jigideers. A happier one than last year for many as you could meet with family and loved ones to celebrate the day. The parades and other festivities might still be toned down but you can celebrate the successful vaccinating of millions. I'm sure there has been lots of fried chicken and potato salad made today (Nora Roberts vividly describes Independence Day picnics in some of her novels, so I feel I can imagine it quite well.)

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag.

Can you believe that all of these are fabrics and fabric panels available to quilters and crafters. I'm sure that some of you who are quilters will have used some of these fabrics in your own creations.

The night before the Fourth was once the focal point of celebrations, marked by raucous gatherings often incorporating bonfires as their centerpiece. In New England, towns competed to build towering pyramids, assembled from barrels and casks. They were lit at nightfall to usher in the celebration. The highest were in Salem, Massachusetts, with pyramids composed of as many as forty tiers of barrels. These made the tallest bonfires ever recorded. The custom flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries and is still practiced in some New England towns.

We spent the 4th July in Westport, Connecticut in 1994. We had a one week visit to his brother and sister-in-law. My husband ran 4 on the 4th in New Canaan carrying the Stars and Stripes in one hand and the then brand new South African flag in the other. We spent the evening on the beach watching the fireworks. The weather was perfect and it was a very memorable day. We also got to climb Bear Mountain on another day of our visit. A great holiday for us all as South Africa had successfully held the first democratic, non-racial elections and Nelson Mandela had been elected and inaugurated as our new President. “Where liberty dwells, there is my country.” – Benjamin Franklin

I hope so too Waldorf. We're om the middle of our third wave so things are a bit rough but at least the vaccination programme seems to be coming on line more efficiently and effectively. Glad you had a better 4th July. Jayne
