Alfredo Ramos Martinez was born on November 12, 1871, in Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. His father, Jacobo Ramos, a middle-class storekeeper, and his mother, Luisa Martinez de Ramos, were strongly supportive of young Alfredo's artistic endeavors. When Alfredo was fourteen, his portrait of the governor of the state of Nuevo León was awarded 1st prize at an art exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. The prize included a scholarship to study at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. The family moved to Coyoacan, a town on the outskirts of Mexico City.
