1958 Reo M35 Cargo Truck

A recent visitor to Beamish Museum as part of their "Dig for Victory" event of 2021 is this very large but splendidly turned out US Army truck, affectionately known as "Alfie".

The vehicle is a 1958 8,000cc Reo M35 6x6 2.5 ton cargo truck. It is ex-US Army and carries the army code 4B3847. It was presumably imported from Continental Europe because they were never exported as surplus from the USA. This particular example is now UK registered and carries the registration number UAS 696.

The Reo M35 was introduced into the US Army in 1950 to replace the legendary GMC CCKW trucks, although the replacement programme was not completed until the mid 1960's.

Cheers Don, glad you liked it. Many thanks for the additional information.

Pleased to have rattled the memory bank Don. Thanks for the extra information. I'm sure Terry will be pleased.

This puzzle brought back a lot of memories. As a young infantry officer, I spent a lot of time in the early 60s riding in M35s and GMC M212s at Fort Benning, Korea, and Fort Gordon, Georgia. We called them "deuces" (short for deuce-and-a-half: 2 1/2-ton truck) - the same name applied to the CCKW Jimmies of World War II. If my memory of U.S. vehicle marking conventions serves me correctly, Alfie is Truck Number 7, Company I, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. The 6th Armored Division was inactivated in 1945, so Alfie appears to be disguised as a WWII Deuce.

Many thanks Terry and Ferret for the memories and for another excellent puzzle.

Don
