Meknes
A medieval city high on my list of must sees. All set to do this at end of tour a friend and I arranged for Tmbuktu (MALI). . . but alas a coup d'etat in Mali just a few weeks before we were to be there left two guides and 20 adventurpus travelers adrift. I check at least once a year with travel agent there. . each time learning it is stillnot safe! So I missed Fez and Meknes too.

Timbuktu meant a visit to the libraries that hold/held hundreds of thousands of medieval manuscripts. Not to worry about them. . .they were saved largely to theefforts of Sheikh Abdul Haider. . .known to some from the book about that rescue. . "The Badass Librarian of Timbuktu". . . Assou, Mama Kune, Amadou, and Sheikh Abdul Ha'der. . .I will see you again!

Perhaps we all have such moments, but I think few feel the emotional freedom to be moved to tears.

Berkeleyborn

I posted that because I think we have all had such moments of ecstacy. . . perhaps that golden time of early evening. . . nothing special about me.

carolsmc

Oh, Audrey! What a uniquely passionate child you were!

Berkeleyborn

Abjab, I think the eclectic choices I make (and I'm also Audslibrary) are reflection of blessings I've received through being open to change and difference. When little I remember ecstactic (I didn't know then, the word to describe what was happening) of crying when seeing city lights at night spread out before me. . . crying softly because I KNEW there were so many wonderful people out there, with wonderful stories. . .and I couldn't possibly meet and get to know them all.

Abjab

Whoops sorry , I meant eclectic.

What a good idea Carol!

Your Jigidi family will be ready and eager to join you while you're in quarantine, Audrey! So glad your hotel will include both the wifi and the grand view! Maybe the view can become a puzzle so we can share it.

eagleboi

Oh my, you will have to have the food brought to your room then. Yes being quarantine you would want a room with a view. Be safe

Berkeleyborn

Well Jim, I look actually every bit as old as I am. . .but my spirit says I'm only 50 and thank God my body seems to obey my spirit. But like most people my age, when I get sick it really knocks me down. I've got to spend 8 days in hotel quarantine in Jakarta before they will let me travel to Bali and so boy will I be jigidi-ing them. I've asked for a hotel room with great wifi and a grand view out of a window. . . and of course I'll be paying for it and three meals a day. (Maybe I should have asked about good food?).

eagleboi

What you are able to be doing is amazing to me Audrey, when I go to see my family in the Philippines it takes me a few days to recover what with all the walking through the airports never mind the 18 plus hours getting there. I don't know how you do it, and you go around chopping down jungles, you are quite the gal ;-) I have a lot of respect for you my friend. Be safe above all please and may God watch over your globetrotting all around the world my o my.

carolsmc

Looking forward to these lucious lemons and limes, Audrey!

Berkeleyborn

I was editing some photos on the plane back to California earlier today. I will be posting some. . . lemons and limes first!

carolsmc

Well done, Audrey! You are a livewire! I'm sure the neighbors will enjoy and benefit from the lemons and limes. I'm trying to picture you, the house, and the trees. Thanks for keeping in touch and assuaging our curiosity. Please take care and be safe, friend.

Berkeleyborn

Carol and Janet . . . thuderstorm over by morning. I just wanted the two trees to have all those bouganvillea vines (sorry I am reduce to phone with no spell check) and everthing else chocking out the life of these two trees . . .each with fruit on a single lond branch juttimg out from under everything. It had to be cut away a little at a time all round (like tbe layers of an onion) until I foung a living tree inside! I think it is a female thing. I will actually make a cool drnk with the lime. But there is only one solitary lemon up very high. I will leave her where she is because she certainly made a cry for help.
As for their future? Neighbors will once again be able to help themselves to abundant lemons when next season comes. VERY few lemon trees anywhere here.. .never in market. Limes are readily available but still not free! "Community" is a principle of permaculture. . .and "fair share" to me, means the birds and to other creatures as well. . .though some insects are bent on taking more than is fair.
(how to you put a smiley face here?)

Oputz

You are gardening in Belize in a thunderstorm?????
Best make some lemoncello.....

carolsmc

Audrey, Audrey, Audrey, I have so many questions swirling around but I'll just go with, "what are your plans for those lemons and limes?"

Berkeleyborn

I am alone in this once grand house on the edge of the water. Jungle has encrouched big time but I am doing my best to unveil lemons and limes that are underthere somewhere. Glad someone stopped by today to tell me that tree next on my list to cut out was Poisonwood! I got a bow saw and taking down branches and limbs. . .vert invasive stuff.
Hope all is good with all os you and our jigidi family.

Oputz

Audrey the Intrepid for sure @carolsmc!
Good to hear that you are adventuring away Audrey!
Loving this poster series.
Stay dry and keep us in the loop!

I hope you manage to get there soon. Fez is so atmospheric & wish I could have spent longer there. Thank you for a nice puzzle & information.

carolsmc

All that and ... now Belize in a tropical stop with horizontal rain. Of course, there are adventures ahead for you, Audrey the Intrepid!

Berkeleyborn

Carol and Artola - Your are very kind, girls. Yes Mali was the greatest adventure my other friend Carol and I have had. . .just the two ofus in a landrover with Amadou driving and Mama Kuni as our guide. We got to experience things few tourists get. . .like having these two guys wake us up early to see the camel caravan that had just reached this southern city - Timbuktu- on the edge of the Sahara. . . loaded with slabs of salt! Still . . .in 2008! But now I am in a thunderous tropical storm in Belize. . and the rain is totally horizontal and coming in tbrough those louvered panes of glass that you crank down to keep out the rain? NOT WORKING. I think the ekements are telling me there are still adventures ahead.

carolsmc

I hope you make there soon, Audrey. Meanwhile, thank you for giving us a peek and for teaching us about Sheikh Abdul Haider. The term "badass" should be reserved for just such heroics.

Artola

I love travel posters and love hearing something about the city/country they advertise. Through UOJ, University of Jigidi I get to travel to places I've never seen. So thank you for my trip to Meknes and thanks to "The Badass Librarian of Timbuktu" for saving the manuscripts!! :o))
