Bless your mother! I had 3 boys and that was enough. lol
We had 3 girls, and 2 boys in my birth family. We are all still alive. They had the 3 older kids, then skipped 4 years and had me and my brother. So we were always considered the "little kids."
Families, birth order, and the characteristic traits that go along with the birth order are interesting.

jerrys

@jals 5 boys, 2 girls, 5 siblings survive (3/2).

jals

My mother was #10 out of 11.
I am #4 out of 5.

jerrys

@jals 2nd oldest of 7.

jals

How nice for you, Jerry!
Where did you fall in the birth order?

jerrys

@jals I was lucky to grow up in a family in which Mom swept the blue ribbons at the County Agricultural Fair's baking contests for many years. She stopped entering when a mix cake placed second one year. I learned much at her elbow, She and dad raised 7 kids and she worked outside the home after the youngest began school...and still kept us supplied with wonderful treats.

jals

I was raised with boxed cake mixes. With 5 kids and a full time job, my mom didn't have the time to mix up a cake from scratch. So I do use the cake mixes, but always put my own frosting on. I also make a chocolate buttermilk sheet cake with chocolate frosting that is pretty darned good.

jerrys

@jals Boxed cake mix and cans of "frosting" never have crossed our thresholds.

jals

Yes, and then I have powdered sugar all over. lol But it is worth it!

jerrys

@jals I wholeheartedly agree! There's something cathartic about whomping the butter around the bowl to soften it up before adding whatever flavoring ingredients.

jerrys

@editrix You're making me drool with the memory!

jals

Yum! I can almost taste the frosting. I always make my own, I think canned frosting is not as good.

editrix

Love the subtle shifts in texture and reflection, and the play of textures in the piping! And now craving chocolate cake!
