July 8th Vintage Barkcloth

I love these vintage barkcloth fabric designs. They remind me of beach cottage holidays as a child. In those days a cottage was a cottage, or even what is called in South Africa, a pondok, furnished with ancient bits and pieces of furniture scavenged here and there. The curtains were almost always fairly ancient barkcloth fabrics.

Nowadays a beach cottage is a two story mansion decorated in the utmost beach chic decor - whites, blues and sand colours are the norm. Hardly practical for a horde of kids returning wet and sandy from the beach! Nor, it must be said, wet and sandy dogs and puppies!

They belong to the countryside, and seem just to have grown there, tinged and coloured by all the local influences of soil and climate. There is nothing obtrusive about old cottages. They do not dominate the landscape, but are content to be part of it, and to pass unnoticed unless one looks specially for their homely beauties."
