LOL! ;-)

Heicel

@bluebird42 Another thing we two wise ones have in common ;-)!

We have one kind here called Jack-o-lantern (I think) that can be confused with chantrelles. At least the books warn about that, so I would only get the chantrelles if I was with someone who really knew their mushrooms well. Now, like you, I only "pick" them at the store.

Heicel

@bluebird42 What a story! Thanks a lot for telling about your 'mushroom adventure'!
When I was a child, in summer we went through the cornfields near our summer-house. Between the talls stalks meadow-champignos grew - and I'm pretty sure it's the same type you had! There's only the danger to mistaken an amanita with them - which is very poisonus -, but we knew exactly what the differences were.
We fried them directly on the wooden stove and ate them with just a litte salt.
To pick other mushrooms one had to get up early, maybe at 4 am and go through the woods with a neighbor girl who knew several types for sure. We also found chanterelles (which are not easy to confuse) and boletuses and bay boletes and several more.
I liked mushrooms so much that I overate myself one day heavily. From that day on for many years I ate no more of them. Today I like them again - in small portions. And I buy all of them at the store!

This one looks familiar. It is not really the one we call Inky Cap, but something like it. Many years ago I began trying to learn about edible mushrooms. I will eat our common meadow mushroom (it is the same kind they sell in the stores). And the puffballs with white insides. One year when we were walking through the woods my mother-in-law said, "Oh those are chantrelles! They are delicious! and she picked maybe a dozen of them which we took home to eat with our lunch. Later that afternoon we went to the beach to gather clams. I was going to make stuffed clams for some friends the next night. So after my mother-in-law left in the evening, I began chopping the clams for the next night. And soon I began to feel a little sick. Oh, it must be the mushrooms, I thought. They must have been the kind that look like chantrelles but are really a poisonous kind. But after I went outside I felt better again. The kitchen was small and I guess the clam smell was too strong. Later that summer I saw a cousin who was a mushroom expert, and I told her the story of being sure I had been poisoned by mushrooms. She laughed and said, "You don't know how many times I have lain in my bed and worried that I just poisoned my whole family." That was the last time I ate any mushrooms that did not come from a store (except our meadow mushrooms I knew very well). Some are very beautiful, but I will not even touch them!

Heicel

@wasicu Sorry to hear that. I'll post a foto of one of ours for you, if I manage to get one ;-)!

I definitely didn't eat it - I'm not a 'shroom lover for eating. But it was beautiful. I check every where I could think of to try to find out what it was - no luck. It was beautiful!
Didn't come back last Fall - we were in a severe drought. So far this year hasn't come back yet this year - don't expect it to this year either as we are again in severe drought.

Heicel

@wasicu As long as you don't eat it - enjoy the sight! We're having beautiful fly ajarics popping up in our front yard.
And thanks for your comment!

Fall before last, I had a 'shroom come up in my yard under the crabapples that looked similar. Never found out what it was.

Heicel

@davitai I don't think so. I guess it is a parasol, quite a tasty mushroom while young(er). I wouldn't bite into it, though, since I'm not an expert on mushrooms :D!
Thanks for your friendly commenT!

davitai

Is it a poisonous mushroom? Very nice photo, thanks, Heicel!
