Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The blue eggs are from a breed called an Araucana (South American). Most meat and dual purpose breeds of chickens lay various brown and tan eggs. Marans (French) and Welsummer's (Dutch) lay dark brown eggs. The rest involves a good breeding program and patience as each generation grows old enough to start laying.

@hippo. I noticed that the good old fruit fly got a mention in the Wiki article on polygenes. Why am I not surprised?

rlwemm

Thanks, @hippo. Interesting. Something I didn't know, and something that was a little more complicated than my knowledge of genetics could entirely grasp. However, brain stretching is a good thing, don't you think?

Eggsactly what I thought Heidi 🐓

Mischka

I understand now, thank you!

Surreal_Heidi

I'm talking about genetic traits that involve multiple genes instead of a simple single gene dominant/resessive trait.

hippo

@Mischka, I think she is talking about polygenes...

Mischka

I've never heard of blue and olive layers!

"polygenetic" - do you mean a chicken can be impregnated by two different males, like cats?

This really is fun, kudos to you for giving us a cool puzzle!

Surreal_Heidi

The color is just on the surface. Inside, an egg is just an egg. You're right, @tori1947.

tori1947

An egg by any other color is still just an egg.

Surreal_Heidi

Don't forget polygenetic traits.

rlwemm

Shades of Mendel. Genetics is fascinating - and not quite as simple as the classic notion. As far as coloring is concerned, there is partial dominance, mosaicism, crossover effects and a whole range of "sports" resulting from one of the main causes of evolutionary change: failure of a gene to replicate exactly.

As long as they look yellow when cooked and scrambled........

Very interesting Heidi, enjoy your weekend mate......B

Surreal_Heidi

No.... white is the egg color found in most Mediteranean breeds and in breeds raised solely for egg production.

hippo

:))

iceng

If I understated it, white is a rare color ? :-))

okieclem

Fascinating -- thanks, Heidi
