Why are you reporting this puzzle?

My country is in chaos with rioting, marches and mobs looting, burning and attacking shopping malls and city centres. Ostensibly this is in support of ex President Jacob Zuma who was finally jailed last week after months of playing the Zondo Commission of Enquiry into State Capture, which he actually instituted while he was still President.

In reality it is, in two parts, firstly the reaction of people being told that there was another two weeks of Level 4 Lockdown, being out of work, hungry and desperate, and secondly, sheer criminality and opportunism. When people drive up in their Mercedes Benz and go in to loot big screen TVs and top of the range Fridges, it's not because they're hungry. It's because they've learned that politicians have been ripping off the country for the past decade with no legal results, so this is their chance to steal something for without risking prison.

I am very sad tonight about all the business owners whose livelihoods have been stolen and premises trashed. I am very sad about the breakdown of law and order. I'm very sad about the rise of despair and anger within and between communities. I wonder if the slide into anarchy can be halted and civility reinstated. I wonder where the people of ethics and decency are.

I can only think of the great poem The Second Coming by the Irish poet W. B. Yeats that encapsulates so beautifully the despair I feel tonight.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Pray for South Africa please.

Praying for South Africa.

Woodowly

Thank you so much jlovermyer. I really appreciate your prayers and your country is also in mine. We have family and friends living there and I have watched the unhappy circumstances you refer to with dismay. It seems at a time when we have never been more connected thanks to the internet, we are more divided than ever. It is a great tragedy of our times. Bless you and yours. Jayne

Just read your note of concern for your country. South Africa will be in my prayers. I ask for you to also consider the U.S. Its state is poor also, too much division and foolishness about politics and the pandemic. Makes one worry about the future of our global community. Take care, and thanks for the lovely fabric puzzles. Combines two of my passions.

It seems to have settled down again but the damage is enormous. Many businesses will never re-open. Most investors are also not interested in rebuilding malls if this is what happens. We are on what Clem Sunter described as South Africa's low road. It is all terribly sad Judy. YF Jayne

Dear Jayne, The local people are trying to help and the rioters should run out of steam I hope. My prayers continue for you and for your country. How shocking and saddening for people of good will and intentions. Be safe, dear one. Y F Judy

I think we will see a swing back of the pendulum. We are seeing a pushback by ordinary people in the communities who know that they will lose their jobs if this looting is allowed to occur where they live. Let's pray so Waldorf.

The so called civilized countries of the world are marching to a different step - and we are praying for sanity to return before the steps go too far.

Woodowly

Thank you so much Jane, John, Dize, MG and Owl for your messages of support. I really do appreciate them. We are seeing some pushback from communities that are determined to protect their own resources, livelihoods and food sources. It is just such a tough time to go through. Thanks for your thoughts and care. Jayne

Gosh! Thanks for the wake up call Woodowly.
Had no idea it was that bad in South Africa. Thanks for making us aware and thanks for Yeats. We will pray for South Africa and you.

Jayne, I've been so focused on immediate situations here that we haven't even had national news (let alone international) on for months. I'm so sorry; we have similar situations here - the looting comes from mob mentality, I'm convinced. And yet, like you, am at a loss to suggest a way to "dial down" the frustration. I empathize with, yet do not forgive, these actions.
Your country is in my prayers tonight and will continue.
Hope you & Mike are safe.

Lovely!

I am so sorry you all are under such stress. Just the Covid threat is bad enough. God Bless and keep you all safe! ditto the thoughts of Jane

So sorry to hear about things there. I will keep you and your country in my thoughts and hope that common sense prevails soon. Hugs, Jane
