Thank you Ardy, Shirley, and Heicel. I was standing on a path above the water and under a tree, so I guess maybe he didn't see me. The gull was flying low over the water, so I really was at eye height -- actually just a little above eye-height -- and I had the zoom extended, so he looks closer than he really was. I agree, Shirley, the wingspan seems much longer than I think of a gull having. But most of my shots have the wings bent at an angle, either above or at least partially below the body; not straight out and parallel to the body. I caught him mid-flap.
This foto looks as if you and the gull are on an eye-to-eye-level which gives it an enormous intensity - fantastic! Thanks for sharing yet another little masterpiece!
