Sierra Club notified me:
Starting this week, the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation will transport a 24-foot totem pole from Washington State to Washington DC.1 This journey -- the Red Road to DC -- is an online and on-the-ground mobilization happening throughout the month connecting 20 Native-led struggles to protect sacred lands, waters, and wildlife from threats posed by climate change, dams, and extractive industries like oil, gas, and coal.
This summer we're partnering with the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation in a journey to protect sacred spaces through the Red Road to DC. As the totem pole travels, it will visit many sacred and cultural places to draw lines of connection -- honoring, uniting, and empowering communities working to protect all sacred places.
Today we face a great challenge… What's happening in the world is the result of a perspective that sees everything as a resource to be exploited. It's killing mother earth. It threatens life on the planet. People and animals are suffering... The totem pole journey is a project that makes visible the struggle for life. It brings awareness of the connectedness of the people to the earth and to history. It ties together communities who are living on the frontline of the environmental emergency. It makes the commonality of their suffering visible and strengthens the bonds of solidarity between them. -- Freddie Xwenang Lane (Lummi Nation)
The pole carries the spirit of the lands it visits and the power and prayers of communities along the way -- ultimately delivering these prayers, power, and demands to the Biden-Harris Administration and Congress in Washington DC, and culminating in an exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
