Rod pravděpodobně pochází z oblasti která se rozkládá od střední a jižní Evropy přes východní až po okolí Kavkazu. Asi čtyři druhy mají původ převážně v Evropě a šest druhů v eurokavkazské oblasti. Postupně byly rozšířeny do západní i severní Evropy, stejně jako do Severní Ameriky.

The genus probably comes from an area that stretches from Central and Southern Europe through Eastern to the Caucasus. About four species originate mainly in Europe and six species in the Euro-Caucasus region. They were gradually spread to Western and Northern Europe, as well as to North America.
