Love bats :)

Surreal_Heidi

Bats can really hustle, since they spend their time catching mosquitos, which are fast moving.

hippo

It DOES have the LUSHEST beak, @Mischka :))

Mischka

@nanab - You're right. I *always* go to Google; why didn't I this time? :-) The problem is that I have only impressions, not a clear visual.

@solidrock5806 - Ahh, I did not know that we have nighthawks. Because of the sunset mosquitoes, I rarely go outside at that time, except to feed some cats. A hawk would fit, because the wings seemed broad; but I could not discern the size of its head at all.

@Surreal_Heidi - I didn't know, or forgot, that some bats are solitary! I love bats and own bat books, but I haven't pulled them off the shelf in years.

@peasterberg - yuk yuk yuk, I should have seen that one coming. :-)

@joy2u - I think you and Heidi have nearly convinced me it was mammal, not avian. No, "convinced" is too strong a word, but I heard no flapping of wings, it was all visual.

I will keep looking for it again, if I can remember to check sunset times and feed the outdoor cats then.

Thank you, my fellow sleuths!

P.S. @hippo and @nanab will notice at once that SLEUTHS is an anagram for HUSTLES, which this creature did, it really hustled along.

You must keep us updated Fiona :)

PutterDutt

I don't claim to be e bird expert, but am 90% sure I've got this one right.

Fowly

Sorry I can’t help you Fiona, please keep us updated on this interesting sighting. Good luck, Fay.

RandomWorship

Yippee! Toucan points for me! (❛ᴗ❛)

joy2u

There are different sized bats, and they are fast. they hunt at twilight, and so do Screech Owls. Screech Owls will dive to the ground, then fly from tree to tree. Usually in groups, but not always. They make a soft cooing-sort of sound when hunting. Cooper's Hawks are very fast, and love feeder birds. A smaller hawk would be the American Kestrel, who is in the falcon family, so very fast and agile.

peasterberg

Got it!

So Fiona has a bat in her belfry! The way they flutter can be quite disconcerting.

Surreal_Heidi

It could also have been a bat, Fiona. Some species are solitary. When I was a kid I used to wander in the woods and catch solitary bats sleeping under bits of loose tree bark during the day.
Their echolocation squeeks are so high pitched that the human ear can't hear them.

solidrock5806

Mischka

I wish I'd had some of you with me when I had an Unidentified Flying Creature in my yard last evening.

@Fowly, @Surreal_Heidi, @PutterDutt, @hippo, @joy2u - and anyone else who knows winged things:

Sunset. I was sitting on my back stoop and watching the feral outdoor cats enjoy their dinner, when something zoomed about 3 feet over my head towards the southeast corner of the yard.

My back yard is entirely hemmed in by trees, so we have sanctuary for butterflies and bees, to my joy, and ordinary suburban birds spend their time in the tops of the fruit trees.

This thing could have been laboratory-made, it was so fast - fast enough for me to register it only as a blur of motion, and large, and utterly silent.

Next, it zoomed to the western side of the yard and spent its time dashing around the branches of the huge Royal Poinciana tree. I would say that I couldn't take my eyes off it, but in fact I could barely keep my eyes on it, it moved so swiftly. Twilight, probably predatory, possibly hunting moths - and hunting alone.

I kept thinking "bat" because of the wingspread and shape, but bats travel in families and make those high-pitched echolocating squeaks. Hawk, maybe? But they're diurnal, aren't they?

Could it have been an owl? They hunt solitarily and silently, but can they fly so speedily that you can't make out a single detail? Actually, the one detail I was sure of was the sense of menace, and after about 10 minutes, when it made another round of the yard, I was frightened enough to come indoors and call Bruce to say what had just happened.

Heidi, an owl can fly at about the same speed that a great racehorse can run. One can make out details of a horse when it passes you at the rails. This creature was incredibly fast - though the sky was darkening every minute, it was silhouetted against the western sunset.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I will look for it again tonight, and might call the biology dept. at U of Miami on Monday. I was awed, a little frightened; I am super curious. Perhaps it was a hawk in the process of evolution, learning to... No, I know our local hawks; they have visited my yard only during sunshine. So what was it??

nanab

A few days ago Ms_Maddy posted a great puzzle about Bruce, an Alpine Parrot.

I posted the link to a video clip of Bruce 'doing his thing.' : )

Surreal_Heidi

Got it.

To be specific, this is a Toco Toucan.

And those huge beaks are hollow, so are very light weight.

▌/\ ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶ /\ High Hoof :))

hippo

Yup. 20/24. Soon to be 21/25! :))

manicpuzzler

And the answer is ....................... TOUCAN

Toucans are distinguished by their large and often multi-coloured beaks. They live in the hollows of trees and are a species of bird that does not migrate. They live together, either in pairs or small flocks.

manicpuzzler

Thank you one and all :))

Good luck everyone :))

LOL :))

RandomWorship

Hurrah! And easy peasy one! (❛ᴗ❛)
