In earlier times, taps in private housing was rare. People got their water from the public wells - about one for each town-district. The wells were highly frequented; here you could not only get water but the newest gossip as well!
The most modern ones were pumping stations like this one.

There are still such wells in our villages. However, they are no longer used.
