I admit to feeling a pang of sympathy when a huge great blue has nothing more than a tiny minnow to snack on. It's sort of like being offered one kernel of popcorn and then having to wait for the next one to come by.
I always feel sorry for any heron or egret when I see them dip their heads down again and again without catching anything. I hate to think of them being hungry.
Thanks, Ginni. This one stood still for a bit, but did more pacing than I usually see. He dipped his head a few times, but didn't seem to be catching much of anything.
Thank you Advia. They stay completely still for long periods of time so the fish or crabs forget they are there. Then there is a lightning fast stab of that long beak and breakfast is ready to swallow. Because they are so still, they are easy to photograph.
