1943 Austin Ten Light Utility Truck
Standing in a makeshift army camp at Beamish Museum is this 1943 Austin Ten "Tilly" pickup truck in British Army livery (49th (West Riding) Infantry Division markings), showing the fleet designation M5394755.
The utility model, or "Tilly" as it is more popularly known, is the army version of the standard Austin Ten Saloon. It is upgraded from the standard saloon by having a bigger engine and fuel tank fitted, and a water pump and cross country tyres added.
Around 30,000 of these vehicles were manufactured, but only about 160 are known to survive
This particular vehicle now carries trafficators and the registration number UAS 370, which it would not have done in it's army service days.
The car was at the museum as part of their "Dig for Victory" event at the beginning of September 2021.
