Hello, about magnetos for the spark - it is still more reliable than battery ignition. Small sports aroplanes with piston engines have doubled magnetos and hence double set of spark plugs. Expensive but reliable.

See my first two comments of 5 June 2021...

This bike has appeared several places on the Web recently. The steering function is part of it's charm and the discussion. I think it's called "center hub" steering. If I can find one of the articles I'll come back and post a link but don't recall right now off the top of my head.

Cooksville

Can't comprehend the steering. Both wheels seem attached to the frame.

A lot of times the auction company hires somebody to get such prospects running. They may or may not put much effort into it but any vehicle is worth more if running. In a former lifetime I went to a lot of auctions and bought cars. Non runners are a good deal if you do what I do.

I'm surprised, I think the article said it was 400 cc's.

Belongs in a museum. On one hand I see the value and reason for the 100K price. On the other hand I think it's stupid.

Wow! I'm impressed, disston!
Well worth 100K of anyone's money for its uniqueness.
I hope the new owner doesn't/didn't do more than get it running.

Mystery solved. It's a 1907 Zenith Bi-Car Motorcycle that recently sold at auction for a little over $100,000. Read move:

The headlight appears to be an acetylene unit. Notice chimney.

Agree the chain driven horse shoe magnet thing is a magneto. There is no battery so the magneto makes the electricity for the spark. Technology that's very old and still used today on such things as lawnmowers.

The only part that has me stumped is the steering.

It's a magneto - not an alternator. Two completely different things.

gantenbein

nothing else was meant. google translate calls it "alternator"

The 'chain driven alternator with horseshoe magnet' is a magneto which provides the electrical energy for the sparking plug to operate.

Nice comments. No ideas given on the forum it came from. If I can find the original I'll ask.

gantenbein

not to forget the chain driven alternator with horseshoe magnet

It looks plausible that this is a real machine. There's belt drive to the rear wheel; seat, handlebar/headstock and footrests look proper. Front wheel appears to be centre-hub-steer. But the chassis/frame just doesn't look right!

sellbeats

at least the headlamp will light up the front fender
does this appear to have front wheel drive ?

Someone's sculpture of motor, pipes and tires for burning man, not for riding, looks like replica of a rice burner though. Not a crotch rocket might be a a*s rocket LOL.

Appears to have hub-centre steering and a very whippy frame/chassis.
It looks like an early concept that never caught on - or is it an imaginative repurposing of surplus central heating pipes?
Someone must know...?
