@wentworth I think it's different to a cog or rack and pinion railway which is sometimes inserted into a track at a particularly steep point. The funicular rail is for short, steep climbs such as up a hill in a town or as here in your photo. Have a look at this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funicular
